Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a procedure that removes and replaces your crystalline lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) implant. Lens implants can be single vision for distance (patients then utilize reading glasses for close work) or multifocal (similar to a multifocal contact lens) for distance and near vision. We make several different RLE options available to you here at our clinic, including the ReStor® IOL , ReZoom® IOL and Crystalens.

Over the many years, this procedure has been developed and thoroughly tested to a high level of precision for patients who have cataracts and undergo cataract extraction and IOL implantation. RLE is identical to this process, but it is performed electively to reduce the need for glasses and contact lenses. To view a sample animation detailing cataract removal, click here

The most appropriate candidates for RLE are in their late 40's or older, farsighted or nearsighted, and typically beyond the range of more conservative procedures. RLE is more technically and surgically involved than the other options available, and for safety, requires that it be performed in a hospital or surgery center (not in an office surgery suite).

NearVision CK

NearVision CK® is a low risk, minimally invasive option for treating presbyopia and/or farsightedness. CK uses the controlled release of radiofrequency energy to reshape the cornea.

CK is performed using a small probe, thinner than a strand of human hair, that releases radiofrequency energy. The probe is applied in a circular pattern to the inner corneal tissue to make it shrink. To view a video detailing the CK procedure, click here

CK is usually best suited for those who are over 40 years of age who had good vision until they reached their forties. It’s good for people who don’t want to put up with the constant hassle of reading glasses or bifocals. It is not for those who: have had previous vision correcting surgery; have over +3.00 diopters of farsightedness; have any chronic eye disorders; or who may be pregnant or nursing.

Visian ICL - A New Vision Alternative

Introducing a new solution for patients with high amounts of nearsightedness - the Staar VisianICL™. The Staar Visian ICL™, marketed under the brand name VisianICL™, is a revolutionary refractive lens that can correct vision up to -20 diopters of nearsightedness. The VisianICL™ procedure has been repeatedly improved through years of rigorous studies and continued refinement. This exciting technology received FDA approval on December 22, 2005.

The VisianICL™ is a refractive lens also known as a pkakic IOL. "Phakic" means that the natural lens of the eye is not removed during the procedure and is left in place. IOL stands for intraocular lens, or a lens inside the eye. Therefore, the VisianICL™ is a posterior chamber implant (IOL) that is situated behind the iris and in front of the natural crystalline lens.

Implantation of the VisianICL™ is an outpatient procedure and is considered an alternative to corneal refractive surgery such as LASIK, PRK, in that it offers another option for those seeking reduced dependence on glasses and contact lenses. In addition, the ICL will provide many who are not candidates for LASIK a way to acheive this goal. If there are major changes in one's vision, the ICL can be removed and replaced, or another procedure can be done at any time. With the ICL, one can still wear glasses or contact lenses, if necessary.

The VisianICL™ has advantages over other phakic IOL's, including it's flexable material which allows placement through a small self-sealing incision. No numbing eye injections or sutures are required. Our goal is to provide the best quality outcome, and we believe the Staar VisianICL™ meets our high standards.

The best candidates for the VisianICL™ are those over the age of 21, with moderate to severe nearsightedness. This technology works for those with thin corneas as well. It is best if the candidate has not had any previous ophthalmic surgery and does not have a history of ophthalmic disease such as cataracts, glaucoma, iritis, or diabetic retinopathy. Also, the ICL does not help presbyopia - which is the need for reading glasses due to age.

Paragon CRT

Paragon CRT is a specially designed contact lens that gently and temporarily reshapes the cornea while you sleep. Through intense research and clinical testing, Paragon CRT has been proven both safe and effective for patients of all ages when worn during sleeping hours, earning this therapy FDA approval for nighttime use. The result for you is great vision 24 hours a day-without the lenses during the waking hours and while they’re in at night-with the correction of myopia (nearsightedness) and myopia with astigmatism.
